Helping Marcus get back to bowling

Priya N. · Community Access Support Worker··3 min read
Week 1

First session. Marcus was upfront that he'd rather stay home — fair enough, we didn't push. Sat on the porch for twenty minutes and talked about his old football team instead.

Week 2

Short trip today: coffee two streets over. No drama. He picked the café, which felt like a win in itself.

Week 3

Walked around the block after coffee. He mentioned, almost in passing, that he used to bowl as a teenager.

Week 4

Booked a lane for next week before I could second-guess it. He pretended not to be excited. He was excited.

Week 6

Bowling is now the one appointment he never wants to move. Beat me by forty pins today and will not let it go.

What this is really about

Community Access support isn't ticking a box — it's finding the thing that makes someone want to get up and go, then protecting that time like it matters. Because it does.

This made me tear up a bit. Small wins really are the whole point.

Forty pins is rough 😂 good on him though.
