Ask your Support Coordinator: a few honest answers
What does a Support Coordinator actually do, day to day?
Less paperwork than people expect, more phone calls and problem-solving than people expect. A lot of my week is connecting participants with the right providers, chasing up quotes, and making sure funding is actually being used the way the plan intended.
What's the biggest misconception participants have?
That we make the decisions. We don't. My job is to lay out the options clearly enough that you can make a real choice — not to pick for you, and not to just nod along with whatever's easiest for me either.
When should someone actually call you, versus waiting for the next review?
Any time something changes — a provider isn't working out, your goals shift, a crisis comes up. Plan reviews are a checkpoint, not the only moment you're allowed to ask for help.
What's one thing you wish every new participant knew?
That it's genuinely okay to ask "what does this actually mean for me" as many times as you need to. An NDIS plan full of jargon doesn't help anyone — my job is to keep translating it until it actually makes sense.
